
Pierre Derycz is a graduate of the University of Michigan, with bachelor’s degrees in both cello performance under Richard Aaron, and composition under Bright Sheng, Paul Schoenfeld, and Kristin Kuster. A native of Los Angeles, he started his musical studies at the age of four and continued them at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, where he studied cello with Stanley Sharp, and composition with Bruce E. Miller. In 2009, he graduated from the Franco-American high school Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, obtaining the French Scientific Baccalaureate with highest honors.
As a cellist, he frequently performs new music, and his own works have garnered numerous awards and performances at the University of Michigan and abroad. Mr. Derycz was a fellow at the 2012 Music Academy of the West, and recently completed a Winter Creative Music Residency at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. He is currently Principal Cellist of the YMF Debut Orchestra, for which he also serves as Orchestra Manager and Librarian. Pierre is also a member of the American Youth Symphony, and is a founder of SPLNTRD WOOD cello trio. Additionally, he enjoys exploring both early music with the Los Angeles Baroque and the UCLA Early Music Ensemble, and original electro-chamber music with the band Iridas.
