Pierre Derycz is a graduate of the University of Michigan, with bachelor’s degrees in both cello performance under Richard Aaron, and composition under Bright Sheng, Paul Schoenfeld and Kristin Kuster. A native of Los Angeles, he started his musical studies at the age of four and continued them at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, where he studied cello with Stanley Sharp and composition with Bruce E. Miller.
As a cellist, Pierre frequently performs new music, and his own works have received awards and performances in the United States and abroad. In 2013, Pierre co-founded Splntrd Wood cello trio, for which he and fellow members Ian Gottlieb and Matthew Park craft their own audacious arrangements, deconstructing any type of music and presenting it anew through the inimitable and versatile sound of the cello.
Pierre was a fellow at the Music Academy of the West, and completed a Winter Creative Music Residency at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. From 2015 to 2018, he held the position Principal Cellist with the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Chamber Orchestra, for which he also served as Orchestra Manager and Librarian. Currently, Pierre is a member of the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra, the American Youth Symphony, and has also performed with the Los Angeles Opera orchestra. In his spare time, he enjoys studying maps, writing fugues and cooking.
